CBT Anxiety / Panic Disorders Day Treatment Program

Anxiety, panic disorders and agoraphobia can have a significant impact on a person's ability to function in everyday life. Research has shown that Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) is an effective means of treating anxiety and panic disorders.

The CBT Anxiety/Panic Disorders Day Treatment Program offers effective treatment of anxiety and panic disorders. The day treatment sessions may be commenced during an inpatient admission and completed following discharge, or referred directly as a day patient only.

By teaching new cognitive and behaviour skills the Program increases a person's ability to achieve greater symptom management and emotional stability.

The key skills targeted include:

  • Differentiating between anxiety symptoms, fears and cognitions
  • Understanding how thinking effects feelings
  • Identifying negative and harmful thinking
  • Managing and overcoming anxiety, panic and phobias
  • Stress management skills
  • Relapse prevention skills

The specialist program team, led by Professor Tian P.S. Oei, provide a treatment program that includes the following components:

Primary Treatment Sessions

The primary treatment sessions involve a set number of group sessions and ongoing assessment designed to compliment the individual treatment patients receive from their psychiatrist.

Review & Subsequent Treatment Sessions

On completion of the primary treatment sessions and based on clinical assessment, continuing support and management is available through review and subsequent treatment sessions. These sessions provide reinforcement of knowledge and application of CBT strategies. This assists the person to maintain their health in the community and prevent future relapse.
